You’ve been craving a story. Something with an enthralling plot, fun and dynamic character relationships, and immersive prose. Something that slips you out of your own head and into the shoes of a character launching into a journey full of high stakes and deep purpose. So you go story hunting, searching the genres for a tale that strikes your fancy.
But then comes the frustration, because even more than you want a story, you want to guard your mind. It feels as if your only options are skimming through books with spicy scenes and dark content, or putting up with one that’s slow moving, stereotypical, slightly preachy... but safe.
It shouldn’t be so hard to find a good story that honors your mind, as well as your desire for adventure.
What I found to read in middle and high school was 1) “Safe” Christian romance fiction (which made me feel discontent with my season of life), 2) allegorical fiction that was good content-wise, but felt dry and stereotypical, and 3) non-Christian stories that were fun and well-written, but had questionable scenes, morals, or inappropriate language and content. This inspired me to write stories that had all the fun, adventure, and character depth I longed to read, without spice and content that made me uncomfortable.
